Rethrifting

Money in your closet

You have money in your closet, right now. Yep, I promise you do. There is money, whether it is clothing, shoes, purses, or jewelry. After a year of sitting on my closet, and off my blog, I was ready to get my money in my closet. I always start with my shoes. I have an obscene amount of shoes, from Target to designer. It’s hard to let go of my shoes, as I find that they are part of my personality. The funkier the shoe, the more “me”. This is a ‘just fine’ approach to my shoes, but having more than 15 pairs is not necessary. So, the cull has begun. 15 pairs out – zero in. Take a peek at the shoes and boots headed out the door. I would say that the learning curve is fair with thrifting, both in and out. As a stylist, I have worked on my personal style for decades. I can objectively look at my wardrobe and make decisions based on reality. What reality is that? Well here are the questions I ask myself. (No Marie Kondo “Does this bring me joy?”)

  1. Have I worn it recently?
  2. Is this an event piece or an everyday piece?
    1. The goal is to only have everyday pieces I would wear
  3. Does it fit?
  4. Despite living in California, the weather isn’t predictable. Summers aren’t as hot and Winters aren’t as cold. This question is based on temperature: Do I need it for the (insert weather) months?
  5. If it is sentimental, do I want to leave it to my child to deal with later or just get the cash now? CASH NOW!
